NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Following a solid weekend at SEC foe Auburn, and a couple of midweek home wins over Middle Tennessee and Valparaiso, the Belmont baseball team (11-7, 0-0) will open up Atlantic Sun Conference play on the road at ETSU (9-6, 0-0) this weekend.
The Buccaneers have had a similar start to the season to that of the Bruins, playing 13 of their first 15 contests in the friendly confines of the brand new Thomas Stadium. ETSU is currently 9-6 after defeat Wofford 5-3 in only its second road tilt of the year on Wednesday.
ETSU is batting .293 as a team and is led by sophomore Clinton Freeman with an average of .414 and six doubles. Senior Matthew Scruggs adds a .361 batting average and a conference-leading eight home runs. Jake Long, John Long, and Derek Bushey are scheduled to make starts on the mound this weekend.
The Bruins have now won three straight games, and six of their last eight contests. The Belmont offense has come on as of late, and exploded for 20 runs in the win over Middle Tennessee. Senior captain Zac Mitchell (Cordova, Tenn.) leads BU in a number of offensive categories, including average (.414), triples (3), and a conference best on base percentage (.534).
Junior Chase Brookshire (Chattanooga, Tenn.), senior captain Matt Hamann (Northbrook, Ill.), and sophomore James Buckelew (Lawrenceville, Ga.) are scheduled to start for the Bruins this weekend. The latter is a perfect 3-0 with an ERA of 0.74.
