NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Belmont University men's basketball head coach Rick Byrd announced Friday the signing of Adam Kunkel (Union, Ky.) to a national letter of intent to play basketball for the Bruins, starting in the fall of 2018.
Kunkel, a 6-2 guard, averaged 16.3 points and 3.9 rebounds per game on 41 percent 3-point shooting as a junior at Cooper (Ky.) High School, in leading the Jaguars to a 31-5 record.
In fact, Kunkel has led Cooper to a 73-19 record in his prep career.
"Our basketball staff is excited to welcome Adam Kunkel as the newest addition to our program," Byrd said. "Adam is a tremendous basketball player with great offensive skills. He is an outstanding shooter with deep range, but can also penetrate and finish as a driver. Adam is an excellent passer with a high basketball IQ who creates scoring opportunities for his teammates. In addition, Adam plays with great energy and purpose and comes from an outstanding high school program. We look forward to his contributions to our team a year from now."
Heading into his senior campaign, Kunkel has 1,148 points, 285 rebounds, 121 assists, and 99 steals on 45 percent career 3-point shooting.
Last year, Kunkel was named Kentucky Region IX Player of the Year and Third Team Kentucky All-State. He was also named Lexington Catholic Tournament Most Valuable Player and KHSAA Sweet 16 State Tournament All-Tournament Team.
Kunkel joins Wisconsin guard Mitch Listau in Belmont's incoming class to date.
