Men's Soccer to Play Battle of the Boulevard on Sunday
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Belmont men's soccer team continues Atlantic Sun Conferene play with a single match at Lipscomb this weekend. The Bruins take on the Bisons in the annual Battle of the Boulevard on Sunday at 7:00 p.m.
Lipscomb comes into the annual matchup on a high, after defeating #22 ETSU by a score of 2-1 on October 2. It is one of only two wins for the Bisons this season, who come into this contest 2-8-2 overall but 1-1-0 in A-Sun play. Lipscomb is led on offense by senior Garret Pettis, who has tallied four goals and one assist this season. Brent McGee has accumulated 45 saves and a GAA of 1.93 in goal for the Bisons.
Belmont picked up its first victory over a nationally ranked opponenetsince topping Furman 2-1 on November 2, 2007, beating No. 24/22 ETSU by a score of 3-1 at home on September 29. The Bruins went on to tie USC Upstate 0-0 in double overtime on the road the afternoon of October 2, giving BU a conference mark of 1-0-1 to start the season. Juniors Brandon Tarr (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Lou Manning (Southlake, Texas) were name A-Sun Players of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Belmont and Lipscomb have played every year since 1994 in the Battle of the Boulevard. Adding one meeting in the A-Sun Tournament and it makes the total tilts between the two teams at 15 coming into the 2011 season. The Bruins hold an 8-5-2 advantage over the Bisons, but Lipscomb has come out on top each of the past two years.
With two goals against #22 ETSU on September 29, Tarr tied the all-time record for career goals at Belmont with 22. He is tied with former Bruin Fernando Castellanos, who also holds the career points record with 54. Tarr's next goal of the season will make him the all-time leader in both categories, as his 53 career points currently have him in second all-time. His seven goals this season already place him in the top ten for goals in a single-season at Belmont, his third straight year makingthat list.
