NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with the Mercer Bears on Monday afternoon.
The Bruins struck early when Junior Sam Borgel (Marietta, Ga.) recorded the first shot of the match. His shot hit the crossbar, but senior Matt Vuylsteke (Hamilton, Ont., Canada) was there for the follow up shot which flew wide.
Mercer netted the first goal of the match in the 22nd minute after a Belmont foul at the right corner of the box. Senior Trenton Whitely (Lawrenceville, Ga.) took the free kick and beautifully placed the ball in the upper left corner of the net past freshman goalkeeper Nicolo Dini (Settala, Italy).
Within a matter of minutes, the Bruins evened the match at 1-1. The equalizer came in the 27th minute after an impressive cross from Adriano Balani (Durres, Albania) found the head of freshman Itzik Efraim (Even Sapir, Israel) who put it past the Mercer keeper.
After the half, the rain started coming down at E.S. Rose Park. The second period was largely controlled by Mercer, but the Bruins back line and keeper junior Alex Seeley (Longmont, Colo.) were up for the challenge.
The match ultimately ended in a 1-1 draw.
Belmont returns to the pitch Sunday, Aug. 20, at Missouri State. Kickoff is slated for 4:00 p.m. CT.
