Men's Tennis Opens Spring Season on Wednesday at Austin Peay
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont men's tennis team opens its 2012 spring season this Wednesday as they play at future OVC rival Austin Peay.
The Bruins hope to continue their success from the fall season. In five tournaments, all six players finished the fall campaign with singles and doubles records of .500 or better. Leading the way are senior Rafael Matos and junior Bruno Silva. Matos, a Recife, Brazil native, posted a 12-2 singles and captured his first individual fall title at the UTC/Baras Classic in September. In addition, he has a 7-4 mark in doubles play. Silva finished the fall season with a 10-2 record and won the Silver Flight consolation title at the UTC/Baras Classic.
This week's season opener with Austin Peay is one of 21 matches Belmont will play in the spring season. The Bruins will just play six homs matches. At home, they will host Tennessee Tech and five A-Sun matches (Lipscomb, USC Upstate, ETSU, Stetson, and FGCU). The 15-match road slate includes the likes of Louisville, UAB, MTSU, Florida Atlantic, and four A-Sun matches (Mercer, Kennesaw State, UNF, and Jacksonville.
Wednesday's match with Austin Peay will just be the fifth between the two schools in Belmont's Division I era. It is set to begin at 2:00pm inside the Governors Tennis Center in Clarksville.
