NORMAL, Ill.— The Belmont Men's Tennis team (4-4) kicked off their weekend in Illinois with a win over Wright State, 6-1, on Saturday night.
Whether it was through doubles or singles play, Belmont was dominant all across the board.
All three of the doubles duos for Belmont played very solid tennis. As usual, the Belmont No. 1 doubles duo of freshman Marko Ilic and sophomore Hendrik Inno got a decisive win against Fernando Nardelli and Param Pun, 6-1. This victory improves Ilic and Inno at a season record of 7-1. At court 3, the tandem of David Faulkner and sophomore Vincent Sterkens found success against Carlos Estrada and Varun Kalaiarasan as they won the match, 6-2. Though the court 2 match went unfinished, it is important to note senior Stephen Goldman and junior Zak Khan were leading 5-1 against William Morton and Marcel Ueltzhoeffer.
At the No. 1 in singles play, Inno came out on top against Wright State's Fernando Nardelli, winning the match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
Though not quite as dramatic as last week's singles win, the OVC Player of the Week, Ilic, was able to come away with the victory against Ueltzhoeffer at the No. 2 position by winning in two sets, 6-4, 6-1. This marks his fifth singles win on the season.
At the No. 3 position, Sterkens had a very tough singles match that was forced into a tiebreaker set. After losing a really close first set to Param Pun, 7-6, he was able to come back and win the second set, 6-3. The tiebreaker set came down to the wire, but in the end, it was Pun who ended up as the victor as he won the final tiebreaker, 11-10.
Khan at the 4 position and freshman Jake Briggs at the 5 were both able to shutout their opponents, William Morton and Javier Alvarez, respectively.
At No. 6, Goldman won in two sets against Varun Kalaiarasan, 6-1, 6-4.
Belmont will remain in Normal, Ill., for Sunday's match against the Illinois State Redbirds at 10:00 a.m.
