On Fire In Georgia

ATLANTA, Ga – The Belmont University men's track and field team wrapped up its weekend of competition at both the Georgia Tech Invitational and the Virginia Challenge on Saturday.

Building on momentum from night one at Georgia Tech , junior Caleb Corprew (Midwest City, Okla) broke his second school record of the weekend in the 400 meter hurdles.  His personal record time of 52.95 is also the OVC leading time in the event.  Last night, Corprew broke the Belmont 110 meter hurdle record with an OVC leading time.

Fellow sprinter Nathan Nammour (Tampa, Fla.) also built upon his impressive junior campaign tonight boasting a school record and OVC best time of 47.26 in the 400 meter dash.  Tonight, Nammour beat his two top OVC competitors head-to-head in the event.  His success doesn't stop there.  He set yet another school record in the 200 meter dash with a time of 21.51.

The records don't stop there.  Sophomore Stephen Gibson (Tuscola, Ill.) set a personal record in the discus with a mark of 45.74 meters.

Freshman Drake Mitchell (Nashville, Tenn.) added yet another record to the night in the high jump.  His mark of 1.95 meters was a personal record in the event.

"Nathan and Caleb are on fire right now and they continue to impress me every single weekend.  We always knew they were good and had the potential to be great, but they are redefining their realms of possibility in a big way.  Corey is coming together as a thrower, as well as Stephen.  These four athletes play a big part in the future of this program.  It's really motivating to see our athletes approach these meets with a fire and passion that yields these spectacular results.  The OVC conference meet will be a battle, but we're going in more prepared than ever, and it's because of our leaders on this team," said Associate Head Coach Cameron Harvey.

Three Bruins competed amongst impressive competition at the Virginia Challenge, hosted by the University of Virginia, this weekend.  Sophomore Ben Weisel (Nashville, Tenn.), Sophomore Kaleb McLeod (Soperton, Ga.), and graduate student Matt Dsida (Winnetka, Ill.) represented Belmont at the meet.

Weisel put together a nice 1500 meter run, finishing second in his heat by a small margin with a time of 3:48.47.

"Ben ran a great 1500 finishing second in his heat by .10 seconds.  He didn't get out well and had to make up a ton of ground the last 600 meters.  It was good to see him bounce back from a calf strain and I think he still has an opportunity to go much faster," said Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Jeff Langdon.

The Bruins will be back in action May 5th at the Billy Hayes Invitational in Bloomington, Ind.
