NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Both the Belmont men's and women's cross country teams begin the 2017 season ranked in the South Region.

The Belmont men start the year 12th while the women are 15th, according to the NCAA Division I rankings that were released Monday. The Bruin men are right where they ended the 2016 season while the women are up two spots from No. 17 at the end of last year's competition.

The Belmont men's team placed 12th at the NCAA South Regional last November at Tallahassee Fla., with four runners finishing among the top 80 at the meet. All four -- now senior Matt Edwards (53rd), sophomore Jackson Grzymkowski (65th), senior Anthony Didion (69th) and senior Kaden Eaton (72nd) -- are back this season.

In the women's 17th-place South Regional finish, two Bruins placed in the top 80. Now senior Kiera Weems (78th) is back for another go, though Belmont graduated its top placer, Hannah Denton (64th). Senior Jessica King (107th) and sophomore Kortney Schardt (119th) also return as Belmont's next best placers.

Ole Miss has been tabbed as preseason South Regional top dog in both the men's and women's competitions. The Mississippi men are the defending region champs. The women took second last year.

The Bruins begin their fall slate this Saturday with the Belmont Opener at Percy Warner Park. The women's race gets under way at 9 a.m. with the men to follow at 9:30 a.m.
