Women’s Basketball Hits the Road for Final Game before Holiday Break

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont women's basketball team (4-5, 1-1 A-Sun) takes its two game win streak on the road this weekend with a stop at Alabama (8-2) on Saturday.  Game time is set for 2 p.m.

Alabama will see its first action since a December 12 loss at Kansas when the Bruins come to Tuscaloosa this weekend.  The Tide, who boasts a record of 8-2, have won three of their last four matchups.  Three players from UA are averaging in double figures led by Tierney Jenkins, who is contributing 17.9 points per outing.  Ericka Russell and Jasmine Robinson are adding 11.2 and 10.0 points per contest, respectively.  The Crimson Tide are led in rebounds by Jenkins, who is pulling down 11.4 boards per game.

Alabama leads the all-time series with Belmont but the Bruins won last year's matchup in overtime at the Curb Event Center, 69-67.  Saturday's matchup will be a reunion of sorts as UA is the alma mater of Bruin first year head coach Brittney Ezell and assistant coach Marvis Hodges.

The Bruins are riding a two-game hot streak into Tuscaloosa after defeating Kennesaw State in the Curb Event Center earlier this week for the program's first Atlantic Sun victory of the season.  Aided by senior Shaunda Strayhorn's (Dyersburg, Tenn.) triple double of 11 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists, the first of the Belmont's NCAA era, the Bruins won, 71-55.  Junior Haley Nelson (Scottsboro, Ala.) dropped in a game-high 16 points while freshman Molly Ernst (Louisville, Ky.) added 14 after knocking down four three pointers.  Sophomore Alyssa Visbeen (Franklin, Tenn.) netted a career-high 14 points, 12 of which came from long distance, in the effort.

Strayhorn and Ernst also remain amongst the top NCAA Division I players statistically.  Ernst is ranked sixth in three-point field-goal percentage (50.0), and 14th in three-point field goals made per game (3.0).  Strayhorn is ranked 51st in assists per game (4.9), 62nd in free-throw percentage (85.7) and 218th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.18).

Saturday's game can be heard live via the internet on the Bruins Sports Network.  Live stats will also be available.
