Women’s Basketball Hosts Texas State for Non-Conference Finale on Wednesday
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont women's basketball team (2-10) will look to conclude the non-conference portion of its schedule on a high note during a matinee matchup on Wednesday. The Bruins host first-time opponent Texas State (5-4) in the Curb Event Center beginning at 1 p.m.
The Bobcats have won two of their last three outings, including a narrow 72-70 win over Kennesaw State earlier this week. Texas State is led in scoring by Diamond Ford, who is netting 19.1 points per contest. Ashley Ezeh is also contributing in double digits, adding 14.4 points per game. Ezeh also leads the team in rebounds, each pulling down 9.0 boards per outing.
This will mark the first meeting between the programs.
The Bruins will be on the lookout for a reversal of fortune after being edged in overtime, 58-56, by future Ohio Valley Conference foe Austin Peay over the weekend. Junior Alyssa Visbeen (Franklin, Tenn.) led the Bruins with 14 points. Senior Haley Nelson (Scottsboro, Ala.) notched her fourth double-double of the season with 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. She also had a game-high three blocks and a team-high four steals. Freshman Katie Carroll (Lilburn, Ga.) recorded a career-high nine points in the effort. Freshmen Adrienne Tarrence (Bowling Green, Ky.), Amara Mayers (Harvest, Ala.) and Carroll were all perfect at the charity stripe, hitting 2-for-2.
BU is led in scoring by Nelson, who is netting 14.1 points per contest. She also leads the team in rebounds (6.9), blocks (22), and steals (26). Tarrence and redshirt junior Katie Brooks (Maryville, Tenn.) lead the team in assists with 31 apiece. Sophomore Julianne Downs (Franklin, Tenn.) continues to lead the at the charity stripe, knocking down 84.6 percent of her attempts.
Nelson continues to stand among the best statistically among all NCAA Division I players. Her highest rankings are 27th in double doubles (4.0), 71st in blocked shots per game (1.8) and 80th in field-goal percentage (49.7). She is also ranked 225th in points per game (14.1) and 273rd in rebounds per game (6.9).
Belmont Athletics also has two ticket promotions running for Wednesday's contest.
