NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Belmont (5-21) fell on the road at UT-Martin, 1-3, on Tuesday afternoon. The Bruins struggled offensively, scoring only one run on one hit, but held UT-Martin in check defensively, allowing only two runs on five hits. The Bruins return to action this weekend as they travel to Jacksonville, Fla., to begin Atlantic Sun play.
Belmont and UT-Martin endured a scoreless 0-0 tie until the fifth inning. Junior Becca Gift reached on an error by UT-Martin in the top of the fifth. Sophomore Ashley Hammer doubled, scoring Gift, to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the inning. The Skyhawks scored one run in their half of the fifth and then added two more in the bottom of the sixth to take a 1-3 lead. The two runs would be enough, as Belmont was unable to rally in the final innings.
The Bruins will hit the road again for the weekend, traveling to Jacksonville, Fla., for the start of Atlantic Sun Conference play. Belmont will open with Jacksonville on Friday, with a doubleheader scheduled to start at 4 p.m. CST.
