Softball Splits With Jacksonville to Open Conference Play

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Belmont (6-22, 1-1 A-Sun) split a doubleheader with Jacksonville on Friday evening to open Atlantic Sun conference play. The Bruins will continue their swing through Jacksonville tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader against North Florida at 12 p.m.

Belmont held on to win game one, 4-3. The Bruins got three runs in the top of the third inning and added one more in the top of the sixth to extend their lead. Belmont was out-hit in the game, 9 hits to 12, but the Dolphins stranded nine base runners, including three runners in the bottom of the sixth and one in the bottom of the seventh. The Bruins stranded seven runners in the game, but managed to bring just enough across to get the win and used solid defense to hold of a Jacksonville rally. Belmont was paced by freshman Kirbie Ferrell, who had three hits in three at bats and scored two runs. The Bruins got two RBIs from senior Ashley Byers, the team's offensive leader on the season. Senior Hannah Irwin also had multiple hits for the Bruins with a productive outing on the day with two hits and one walk in three at bats that produced one run and one RBI. Freshman Kat Hollingsworth continued her offensive consistency with one run, one hit, and one RBI for the game. On the day, six different Bruins recorded at least one hit, with nine for the game being one of the highest offensive productions from Belmont so far this season.Sophomore Mia Vierra picked up her second win of the season.

The Bruins were unable to sustain the offensive production in game two, managing only two hits and two runs. Belmont, who had been error free in game one, had two errors in game two. Freshman Heather Turner led the Bruins with two hits, one run and one RBI. After surrendering two runs each in the bottom of the first and second innings, Belmont scored one run in the top of the fifth and seventh innings, but couldn't quite complete the comeback, despite holding Jacksonville scoreless after the second inning.
