NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Belmont (8-26, 3-5 A-Sun) will take a break from conference play when it hosts Western Kentucky in a single game at 5 p.m. at E.S. Rose Park this afternoon. The Bruins will be looking for their first ever win in the series with WKU, who have won all 25 meetings, including two last season in Bowling Green, Ky.
The Bruins are led by senior Ashley Byers, who hit two home runs in Saturday's final game with Florida Gulf Coast, bringing her season total to six and her school/career record total to 25. Byers leads the team in batting average, hits, RBIs, and home runs. She also ranks fifth in the Atlantic Sun in on base percentage (.460). Belmont is also paced by reigning Atlantic Sun Player of Week sophomore pitcher Mia Vierra. Vierra. Vierra, who picked up two wins in the circle with the sweep of Stetson last Friday, became just the fifth Bruin to earn player of the week honors. While Vierra leads the Bruins in conference wins with three, she picked up the award based on her offensive play against Stetson. Vierra had a grand slam go-ahead home run in game one against Stetson and then provided the game winning hit in the second game against the Hatters.
Western Kentucky comes into the game with a 23-15-1 record following a win over Troy. Belmont is coming off two losses to Florida Gulf Coast. Up next for the Bruins will be a crucial conference contest with rival Lipscomb on Saturday. The rivalry game will be the first Battle of the Boulevard:Pink Edition game, as both teams break out the pink for breast cancer awareness. The doubleheader will feature several events promoting breast cancer awareness. The game is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
