Women's Tennis Defeats Rival Lipscomb 4-3 in A-Sun Opener

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont women's tennis team won their conference opener as they beat rival Lipscomb 4-3 in an Atlantic Sun Conference match held Saturday at Centennial Sportsplex in Nashville.  It marked Belmont's 13th win in their last 14 meetings with the Bison.

The match started with singles.  Belmont came out strong winning four of the six matches to take the early lead.  At number one, sophomore Nikki Maciel outlasted Deahna Welcher in three sets: 6-0, 3-6, 6-4.  In the number four match, junior Carolyn Caire defeated Elizabeth Keevil 6-4, 6-4.  At number five, senior Laura Stack beat Danielle Hansen 6-3, 6-4, while at number six, junior Natalia Nunes swept Samantha Bowman 7-6, 6-0.

In doubles, the Bison won two of the three matches to capture the doubles point, but the Bruins clinched the match win 4-3.  The lone doubles win for BU came at number two as Caire and Nunes beat Keevil and Hansen 8-4.

Belmont (4-6, 1-0 A-Sun) returns to the court next Friday as they play at Mercer.
