Trio of Freshmen Lead Women's Tennis at Arkansas State

JONESBORO, Ark . – The Belmont women's tennis team wrapped up its fall season this past weekend at the Red Wolf Invitational hosted by Arkansas State in Jonesboro, Arkansas.

In singles, the Bruins were led by a trio of freshman.  Laura Van Eeckhoudt won the Flight 2 Consolation Bracket.  After falling to Eleonore Tchakarova of Murray an opening round match, the Belgian defeated Ari Baza of Southern Illinois in the consolation semifinals and Kristina Horsikyan of Central Arkansas in the finals. 

Kentucky native Abbie Mather reached the finals of the Flight 3 Consolation Bracket.  She lost in the first round to Julie Gauguery of Arkansas State, but then beat Ekaterina Donetskova of SE Missouri State in the consolation semifinals 7-5, 1-6, 6-3.  However, Mather fell in the consolation finals to Polina Dozortseva of Southern Illinois 6-2, 6-0.

In Flight 5, Maddie Gilley won her opening round match over Maya Smith of SE Missouri State 7-5, 6-4, but fell to Sofia Krsmanovic of Arkansas State in the quarterfinals 6-2, 7-6. 

The highlight in doubles for the Bruins came in Flight 4 as the duo of Mather and Gilley finished in third place.  The freshmen beat Smith and Waransanti of SE Missouri State in the first round 8-2, but lost in the semifinals to Baza of Southern Illinois and Stoltz of Murray State 8-4.  However, in the third place match, the BU duo defeated Stefanov/Krsmanovic of Arkansas State 8-5. 

This tournament wraps up the fall season for the women's tennis team.  They will open their 2014 spring season on January 25 as they host Lipscomb indoors at Centennial Sportsplex.
