MACON, Ga. - - Conference honors continue this week for Belmont senior Maggie Johnson, who was voted the Scholar Athlete of the Year by conference sports information directors, the Atlantic Sun office announced on Tuesday. Johnson was also named the Co-Player of the Year in the conference and an All-Conference first team selection. The honors come a day after Johnson was named the Atlantic Sun Player of the Week for the third time this season.
Johnson, a senior from Naperville, Ill., is an exercise science major with a minor in education. She currently boasts a 3.42 GPA and has been an Academic All-Conference selection three times. 2011 is the first season for Academic All-Conference balloting by conference schools. In addition to her success in the classroom, Johnson has led the conference on the volleyball court as well, topping the season charts in kills and points while setting new single season bests at Belmont in kills and attacks. Earlier this season she became the school's all-time leader in attacks. She was voted by conference coaches as the Preseason Player of the Year in August and has earned All-Conference honors in each of the past three seasons. Johnson was named to the All-Freshman team in 2008, was a First Team All-Conference selection in 2009 and a Second Team pick in 2010. In 2011 Johnson helped Belmont to 20 wins in the regular season while powering the Bruins to their first ever regular season title and the top seed in this week's conference tournament.
Belmont will compete in the 2011 Atlantic Sun Tournament against the winner of the Kennesaw State/ETSU match on Friday, Nov. 18th, at 7:30 p.m. in Allen Arena. The 2011 tournament is hosted by Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tenn.
