NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Led by championships by men's and women's basketball and men's tennis, Belmont University Athletics placed third in the 2018-19 Ohio Valley Conference Commissioner's Cup, as announced by the league office on Monday.
Murray State claimed their second Cup title with 128 points, the most in OVC history. The Racers were boosted by first-place finishes in men's basketball, rifle, women's golf and women's outdoor track & field and second-place finishes in volleyball, soccer and women's indoor track & field.
Jacksonville State finished second with 115, with the Bruins right behind in third at 114. Closing out the top-five were Austin Peay (109) and Southeast Missouri (98.75).
Beyond the success of the basketball and tennis teams, Belmont rode strong finishes from men's and women's cross country, men's golf, and men's indoor and outdoor track, who all posted top-3 finishes.
The OVC Commissioner's Cup, accounts for overall athletic excellence in Conference-sponsored championships, is awarded as follows: schools are required to count point totals for four main sports (football, volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball) along with their next eight highest point totals from the remaining sports, regardless of gender. Belmont, Morehead State and SIUE, which do not compete in OVC football, count baseball as one of its four required sports. For all sports (except rifle, men's tennis and men's indoor and men's outdoor track - which have fewer participating teams), the first place team earns 12 points, the second place team earns 11 points, etc. The scoring system also includes a bonus point for the winner of OVC Tournaments (soccer, volleyball, basketball, tennis, softball and baseball).
The OVC Commissioner's Cup will be presented May 31 at the league's annual Honors Brunch in Nashville.
