Jessica Mattsson -- Student-Athlete of the Month for April

Mattsson had two top-10 finishes in the hammer throw in the last month at Vanderbilt and Western Kentucky.  At the WKU meet, the native of Sweden set a school record of 57.16 meters, which beat the old mark by two meters and is the longest in the OVC this spring.  In addition, she was named OVC Field Athlete of the Week.

Why did you choose Belmont?

Since I didn’t have the opportunity to visit any schools, I just went with my gut. I have to say that the coaches made a great impression too, making the decision somewhat easier.

What do you want to do when you grow up?

I definitely want to travel more, but career-wise something within journalism where I get to help people in some way

What is your ritual before a game/meet/match?

I try not to think about it too much. I’ve had a hard time with the mental aspect of it over the last couple of years so I just focus on keeping myself distracted instead of overanalyzing irrelevant details.

Who is your favorite athlete and why?

Carolina Klüft, a former heptathlete from Sweden. She’s a real inspiration when it comes to sports ethics and the mentality behind success.

If you didn’t play your sport, what sport would you play & why?

Definitely a team sport. I think either soccer, basketball, or handball.

What are you watching on Netflix now?

I actually don’t have Netflix since I’m not much for movies and series, or if it’s the other way around.

What is your favorite quote?

“Det löser sig.” It basically means that everything will be okay, but it’s better as it is in Swedish, there’s no good translation for it really.
