WHICHITA, Kan. – Belmont University sophomore catcher Jackson Campbell (Bowling Green, Ky.) was named to the 2019 Buster Posey Award Watch List the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission announced Tuesday. Campbell is one of 79 catchers in the nation named to the list.
The award, previously known as the Johnny Bench Award, honors the nation's top Division I catcher. The honor is voted on by head coaches and sports information directors.
Campbell has been a stalwart behind the plate for the Bruins this season. He has notched an Ohio Valley Conference best 221 putouts to go along with 37 assists already this season and boasts a fielding percentage of .992. Campbell also leads the OVC, catching 14 runners stealing.
Campbell's bat has also been effective for the Bruins. He leads the squad with four home runs. He has also notched three doubles and two triples.
"I think this recognition is a testament to not only Jackson's athletic ability, but also his extremely strong work ethic and mental toughness," said Head Coach Dave Jarvis.
On May 17, the watch list will be narrowed down to the semifinalists. Ballots will be sent to the national voting panel at the end of May for a vote, determining three finalists. The winner will be announced during the College World Series.
