Men's Basketball Draws Georgia in NIT

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Belmont University men's basketball will face Georgia Wednesday, March 16 in the first round of the 2016 Postseason National Invitation Tournament (NIT), as released by the tournament committee Sunday evening.

The game will be played at the University of Georgia's Stegeman Coliseum. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN2 and the WatchESPN app.

"We have a great deal of respect for Mark Fox and how well his teams are coached," Belmont head coach Rick Byrd said. "Our team is excited about playing in the NIT, and hope our fans are able to travel to Athens to see us play."

Belmont (20-11) won the OVC regular season conference championship - the program's eighth regular season conference championship in the last 11 years. However, an eighth NCAA Tournament appearance since 2006 was not meant to be, as the Bruins were dealt a 97-96 overtime setback to eventual OVC Tournament Champion, Austin Peay, March 4.

Georgia (19-13) advanced to the SEC Tournament semifinal round with victories over Mississippi State and South Carolina, before dropping a 93-80 decision to eventual SEC Tournament Champion, Kentucky, March 12.

This marks the second meeting between Belmont and Georgia. The Bulldogs won, 87-71, Nov. 23, 2002. Former Bruin Adam Mark scored a game-high 29 points.

Belmont has not faced an SEC opponent since the 2010-11 season (at Tennessee, 12/23/10).

This marks Belmont's third appearance in the Postseason NIT (2004, 2014, 2016). The Bruins reached the NIT quarterfinal round in 2014.
