NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Former Belmont University men's basketball standouts Alex Renfroe ('09) and Kerron Johnson ('13) are squaring off in the opening round of Beko BBL German Professional League playoffs.
Renfroe and FC Bayern Munchen earned the playoff No. 4 seed, while Johnson and MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg received the playoff No. 5 seed.
The series has been back and forth, with Renfroe leading FC Bayern Munchen to a 2-1 series lead, before Johnson's 16-point, 8-assist performance in Game 4 Tuesday helped tied the series.
The decisive Game 5 will be played Thursday.
Renfroe and Johnson were named All-German Bundesliga by EuroBasket.com last season.
Now in his seventh professional season, Renfroe previously played for BroseBaskets in Germany, Enisey Krasnoyarsk in Russia, Laboral Kutxa Vitotia and Valladolid in Spain, Enel Brindisi in Italy, KK Zagreb in Croatia and VEF Riga in Latvia.
The Hermitage, Tennessee native earned Associated Press All-America, NABC and Basketball Times All-District and Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year honors in 2009, and was part of the Alba Berlin team that captured a stunning victory over the reigning NBA Champion San Antonio Spurs in last October in an exhibition game.
Renfroe ranks third in the German Pro League in three-point field goal percentage (.482) and seventh in assists per game (5.6).
Johnson, who was a two-time conference tournament Most Valuable Player in leading Belmont to three NCAA Tournament appearances, made an instant impact for MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg.
The Huntsville, Alabama native scored 38 points in his German Bundesliga debut.
Among Belmont's career leaders in scoring, assists, free throws, and steals, Johnson was invited to take part in summer workouts with the Indiana Pacers last year.
