DICKSON, Tenn. – Buoyed by a 11 under par team score in the final round, the Belmont men's golf team won the APSU Intercollegiate held this week at Greystone Golf Club in Dickson, Tennessee. In addition, two Belmont golfers posted top-10 finishes, Noah Trenkler and Evan Davis.
With the first round suspended due to darkness on Monday, most teams had to play 24-27 holes on Tuesday to finish up the 36-hole event.
After posting a team score of 290 (+2) in the first round, the Bruins stormed back in the second round. Paced by four under-par final rounds, squad shot a team score of 277 (11 under par) to finish the event at 567, edging out fellow OVC member SIUE by two strokes for the team title. It was the program's lowest 18-hole team score since the final round of the 2015 APSU Intercollegiate (277).
The title marks the first for the program since April of 2016 when they won the TSU Big Blue Intercollegiate. It's also the second time in four years that they have won the APSU Intercollegiate.
Two Bruins finished among the top-10 at the tournament. Senior Noah Trenkler, who posted a five under 67 in the final round, finished alone in second place at 138. The Hendersonville HS product finished just two shots behind the individual medalist, Kyle Slattery of SIUE. His runner-up finish is a career best and marks the second time this season he has finished in the top-three at an event.
Sophomore Evan Davis tied for seventh place at 141, shooting rounds of 72 and 69. It's his third career top-10 finish for th eLexington, Kentucky native and first since a fifth place showing at last year's OVC Championship.
Junior Brendan Lewis competed as an individual and tied for 44th place at 151.
The men's golf team wraps up their fall season next Monday and Tuesday, October 22-23, at the Pinetree Intercollegiate in Kennesaw, Georgia.
