SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Belmont University men's soccer dropped a 3-2 decision to conference foe, Wofford on Saturday night in South Carolina.
After 30 minutes of scoreless play to open the match, the Bruins opened up the scoring in the 31stminute. Freshman Niccolo Dagnoni (Milan, Italy) scored his second goal of the season when sophomore Matteo Bennati (Genova, Italy) passed him the ball at the top of the box. He ripped a beautiful shot from 18 yards out past the Wofford keeper to give the Bruins a 1-0 advantage.
Wofford equalized just before the half, in the 42ndminute after a free kick deflected into the Belmont goal. At the end of the first frame, Belmont had fired six shots and sophomore Nicolo Dini (Settala, Italy) had made three saves.
The second half proved to be exciting with three goals scored in the final 45 minutes.s Wofford scored in the 51stminute to take a 2-1 lead, but Belmont didn't let up. The Bruins equalized in the 56thminute. Bennati showed some fancy footwork to get through several Wofford defenders and sent the ball to the back of the net to knot things up 2-2.
After more back and forth play, Wofford netted what would be the game winner in the 66thminute off a set piece.
BU outshot the Terriers 13-9 in the second half and put four of those shots on frame. The Bruins continually pushed on the offensive end, earning seven corners in the second half alone and 10 in the duration of the match. Belmont had several opportunities in the match including two shots hitting the post and a ball cleared off the line.
Belmont will be back in action Tuesday October 23rdat ETSU for a Southern Conference matchup.
