NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Belmont University men's soccer continues its post-season play Saturday night with a SoCon Tournament Quarterfinal matchup. #6 Belmont will travel to #3 Furman for a 6:00 p.m. CT kickoff.
Saturday will be the seventh time that the two sides have met each other on the pitch. Furman leads the series 6-1-0, however, the last time the teams played each other before this season was in 2009 when the Paladins defeated Belmont 3-0. The teams did play earlier this season and Furman defeated Belmont 4-2 in a thriller.
Belmont faced Furman in regular-season conference play in Early October. The first matchup was held at E.S. Rose Park in Nashville Tenn. In that matchup, Furman struck first in the 8th minute, but Belmont clawed back and equalized in the 36th minute. The match continued to be an exciting one with Furman taking a 2-1 lead before the Bruins equalized once again. Two late goals by the Paladins proved to be the difference in the match as Furman won 4-2, but the Bruins gave the squad all it could handle for the first 80 minutes of play. Sophomore Matteo Bennati (Genova, Italy) and senior Adam Voloder (New South Wales, Australia) both netted goals in the October match.
Furman will have the advantage of fresh legs in this matchup, with Belmont playing its third match in a week on Saturday. After the regular season finale last Saturday, Belmont took on VMI Wednesday in the SoCon First round match. Belmont will need to conserve its energy and utilize its deep bench for this SoCon tournament game.
Belmont men's soccer will make its first post-season appearance since 2008 on Wednesday as it hosted #7 VMI. Despite going down a goal, the Bruins bounced back and defeated the Keydets 2-1 to win its first post-season game in a decade. A win on Saturday would mark the first every quarterfinal conference tournament win in Belmont Men's Soccer history.
