San Diego, Calif. – The Belmont Bruins are set to take on the San Diego State Aztecs in the first match of the Courtyard Marriot Central Aztec Soccer Tournament on Friday. Kickoff is slated for 9 p.m. CT at the SDSU Sports Deck.
Friday's matchup will be the first-ever meeting between the two teams, as well as the first trip to The Golden State in program history for the Bruins.
LAST TIME OUT: Belmont (0-1-1) took its first loss of the season on the road against the Georgia State Panthers on Monday. The 3-1 loss came as the first for the Bruins in Atlanta, Ga. since 2013.
Sophomore forward Pablo Martin Virgilio scored the Bruins first goal of the season in the 41st minute against the Panthers. The goal, assisted by senior midfielder Sam Borgel, was Virgilio's first of his career for Belmont.
The Bruins were led offensively by sophomore forward Niccolo Dagnoni, who fired a season-high three shots on goal.
SCOUTING SAN DIEGO STATE: The Aztecs (1-1-0) are led by head coach Lev Kirshner, who enters his 20th season at the helm of the program. During his time at San Diego State, the Aztecs have made three NCAA Tournament appearances, most recently in 2016. Kirshner has registered a 138-167-55 record in his two decades with San Diego State.
In 2018, the Aztecs posted a 7-10-1 (2-8, PAC-12) record and finished sixth in the PAC-12 standings to end the year. San Diego State also lost three starters and seven letterwinners from their 2018-19 season. However, the Aztecs return senior midfielder Pablo Pelaez, who led the team in points (15) and goals (6) last season.
UP NEXT: The Bruins will round out the weekend tournament with a matchup against the San Diego Toreros Sunday at 2 p.m. CT at the SDSU Sports Deck. Belmont will wrap up its five-game road stint on Friday with a match at Purdue Fort-Wayne on Sept. 13.
The home opener for the Bruins at E.S. Rose Park will come on Tuesday, Sept. 17 against the Memphis Tigers.
