BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Four members of the Belmont men's tennis team (Jake Briggs, David Faulkner, Dawson Blankinship, and Grant Kelly) have completed their first day of the CCB Invitational in Birmingham, Ala. today.
To start, Kelly/Blankinship faced off against David Skrabut and Jake Penny of Lipscomb in a first-to-win-1-set match. The Battle of the Boulevard preview went to a tiebreaker, but in the end, it was the Belmont boys that brought home the win, winning the set 8-7(5).
In the semi-final round of that draw, Kelly/Blankinship faced off against Nathan Fruh and Santiago Di Loreto of South Alabama. As the late Yogi Berra would say, "It was déjà vu all over again," as Kelly/Blankinship won by the same score as in their previous match (8-7(5)).
The final round of that draw will take place on Sunday, November 4, at 9:00 a.m.
Belmont went 0-4 in singles play, and each player will compete in the consolation bracket within their draws.
Jake Briggs was the closest to pulling out a victory out of the four guys, as he forced his opponent to three sets. He faced Chung Han Tsai of Southern Miss., and in the first set, he was able to grab a clutch win via tiebreaker, winning the set 7-6(4). However after that win, the next two sets were not as close as he lost the next two sets to Tsai 6-2, 6-1.
Tomorrow, November 3, Briggs, Faulkner, and Blankinship will play in their consolation matches at 10:30, while Grant Kelly will play in his consolation match at 12:00.
