BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - - The Belmont men's tennis team completed day 3 in the CCB Invitational today, in which they went 1 for 2 in doubles play and 1 for 3 in singles play to conclude the tournament.
In doubles play, Grant Kelly and Dawson Blankinship faced off against Sebastian Rios and Cotter Wilson of Ole Miss. in the final round of their doubles draw. In this match, Kelly/Blankinship could not quite overtake their SEC counterparts and lost the one-set match 8-4.
In the consolation match, Briggs and Faulkner faced off against Fernando Vargas and Giovani Pasini of University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). The sophomore duo was able to defeat the junior pair of UAB by a score of 8-4.
Grant Kelly went to three sets in his consolation match against South Alabama's Nathan Fruh and was able to hold on for the win. Kelly won the first set 6-4, while Fruh grabbed the second set by a score of 7-5. From there, they went to a tiebreaker set, in which Kelly was able to prevail and win by a score of 10-8.
Dawson Blankinship faced off against David Skrabut of in-town rival, Lipscomb, in his consolation match but was unable to come away with the victory, as he was defeated in two sets (6-3, 6-2).
The next event for Belmont men's tennis, as well as the last event in the fall, will begin on Wednesday, November 7, as Hendrik Inno and Marko Ilic travel to Surprise, Ariz. to compete in the doubles tournament bracket of the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships.
