Track Schedule Released

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont men's and women's track and field teams have released their 2018-19 schedule, highlighted by many familiar meets and locations and a few notably new sites.

The action gets under way in two weeks with Belmont going across town to Vanderbilt for the Vanderbilt Indoor Opener on Saturday, Dec. 1, the appetizer for a challenging indoor and outdoor track schedule to come.

Following an indoor slate that features trips to Vanderbilt, Marshall, Middle Tennessee State and Samford – all meets the Bruins participated in a year ago – Belmont will send its athletes back to Alabama for the Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Championships meet at the Birmingham CrossPlex. The state-of-the-art CrossPlex is the site of the NCAA Indoor National Championships just two weeks later and offers a break from the tradition of conference members hosting the OVC meet.

No OVC program boasts a facility like the Birmingham CrossPlex though, complete with a banked track for optimal performance.

"The big thing this year is our indoor conference meet is at the CrossPlex now instead of on campus," said Belmont Associate Head Track Coach Cameron Harvey. "It's a bank track, which is really good for the conference as far as our athletes getting the opportunity to put down the fastest times to try and get to nationals. The sprinters are really excited about that."

A crowded scheduling at the CrossPlex means the OVC meet will take place on a Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 20-21, as opposed to its typical weekend placement.

The OVC Outdoor Championships will be held in a new location this season as well with Southeast Missouri hosting for the first time since 2012 at the Abe Stuber Track Complex in Cape Girardeau, Mo. That meet is slated for May 9-11.

The Bruins open their outdoor season two months earlier with visits to Georgia Tech on March 15-16 and Vanderbilt the follwoing weekend. Next comes a split-squad week of high-profile races. Belmont will send athletes to both North Carolina State's Raleigh Relays and the University of Florida's Florida Relays on March 27-30.

It's one of two major split-squad dates on the schedule for Belmont, the other coming in mid April when most of the Bruins will be back in Atlanta at the Georgia Tech Invitational while a few distance runners head west to the Bryan Clay Invitational and the Mt. SAC Relays in California.

The final tune-up Tennessee Challenge in Knoxville, Tenn., follows before the OVC Outdoor Championships on a recently renovated Southeast Missouri track.

"SEMO just redid their facilities a few years ago, and the nice thing is the track and the throws are all in one place at their facility," Harvey said. "Everyone will be competing right at the track, which is really nice for that championship environment."

The Belmont men's team is coming off a second-straight silver finish at the OVC Outdoor Championships last May while the Bruin women's team took 10th. The Belmont women were 10th during indoor season as well while the men finished fourth at conference.
