CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - - Belmont University men's track & field got early points on the board on Day 1 of the 2019 OVC Outdoor Championships hosted by Southeast Missouri.
Senior Stephen Gibson (Tuscola, Ill.) did the Bruins proud off the start, earning bronze in the hammer throw with a mark of 59.22m. Freshman Reece Davidson (Arvada, Colo.) placed seventh with a mark of 48.59m to add more scoring.
Junior Braden Carei (Uniontown, Pa.) battled the elements to place fourth in the pole vault, clearing 4.51m.
Competitors had to pack patience as Mother Nature intervened throughout a stormy day.
Junior Kaleb McLeod (Soperton, Ga.) finished fourth in a deep 10,000m field, posting a time of 31:29.43.
Among Belmont highlights in the Day 1 prelims, junior Drake Mitchell (Nashville, Tenn.) stands second at the midway point of the decathlon, while junior Ben Weisel (Nashville, Tenn.) zoomed to the 1,500m final. Junior Alex Miller (Colorado Springs, Colo.) easily qualified for the 400m hurdles final and freshman Brendan Elrod (Crossville, Tenn.) posted the third-best 200m qualifying time (21.94).
