Men Finish Third

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - - Belmont University men's track & field placed third at 2019 OVC Outdoor Championships hosted by Southeast Missouri Saturday.

The Bruins recorded 84 points Saturday, for a team total of 137 to finish behind Southeast Missouri and late-charging champion Eastern Illinois.

The day began with two-time meet medalist senior Stephen Gibson (Tuscola, Ill.) earning fourth in the shot put (15.58m). Teammate freshman Reece Davidson (Arvada, Colo.) was close behind at 15.34m for fifth.

Things kicked into overdrive when Belmont went 1-3 in the javelin, led by freshman upstart Bo Miller (Lawrence, Kan.); Miller's gold medal throw of 51.43m in trying weather conditions outpaced the Redhawks by four-tenths of a meter. Junior Drake Mitchell (Nashville, Tenn.) added to his stellar all-purpose meet with a bronze, rocketing past six throwers on his final attempt (49.27m). Freshman Griffin Hodge (Brentwood, Tenn.) also earned one point.

But Mitchell was not done, posting sixth in the triple jump (13.35m).

From there, the 4x100m relay team of sophomore Hayden Stover (Brentwood, Tenn.), Hodge, sophomore Jared DeVore (Portland, Ore.) and junior Seth Randall (Crossville, Tenn.) finished third (42.30).

As expected, senior Ben Weisel (Nashville, Tenn.) delivered in the 1,500m, earning silver in a fiercely-contested race. Weisel was 0.28 seconds from gold, and less than a second from fifth.

More from Mitchell and junior Alex Miller (Colorado Springs, Colo.) in the 110m hurdles kept Belmont in the team hunt.

Miller would later add a fourth in the 400m hurdles (55.02).

Senior Nate Nammour (Tampa, Fla.) started to tack on to his career OVC medal haul, receiving silver in the 400m (48.30). Freshman Brendan Elrod (Crossville, Tenn.) placed sixth (49.40) for three points.

With little recovery time, Elrod then finished fourth in the 200m (22.31) just one tenth from the podium.

As he did earlier in the meet in the 10,000m, junior Kaleb McLeod (Soperton, Ga.) boosted the team total with three points in the 5,000m (14:46.64).

Appropriately enough, the event concluded with Belmont taking top honors in the 4x400m relay, with Nammour, Elrod, freshman Elijah Sheppard (Danville, Calif.) and sophomore Kaden Kieffer (Dillsburg, Pa.) winning in a time of 3:17.57.

Select men's track & field student-athletes may take part in 'last chance' meets prior to NCAA East Regionals May 23-25.
