Weisel Named Google Cloud Academic All-District

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After helping to lift the program to new heights this spring, a member of Belmont Men's Track and Field/Cross Country team has received Google Cloud Academic All-District honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Senior Ben Weisel (Nashville, Tenn.) garnered First Team Academic All-District 3 honors, as released by the organization this week.

It marks the second time in his career he has been honored for his outstanding contributions athletically and in the classroom, after earning his first nod in 2017.

Weisel, a Nashville native, was a key part of the men's track and field team's success this spring, including a third place finish at the 2019 Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championship earlier this month. He earned silver in a fiercely-contested 1500 meters race and was 0.28 seconds from gold, and less than a second from fifth.

The four-time OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll selection emerged with second-highest GPA among Belmont graduating student-athletes this spring, a 3.98 in Accounting and Honors, but will return in the fall to complete his eligibility in cross country.

Weisel began his career as a Bruin earning the OVC Male Track Freshman of the Year in 2016 and went on to claim the 2017-18 OVC Indoor Champion title in the Mile

The 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-District® Track and Field/Cross Country Team, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.

The Google Cloud Academic All-District® teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada and separately recognizes honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and College Division. The College Division includes all NAIA, Canadian, two-year schools and other affiliations.

As a First-team Academic All-District® honoree, Weisel advances to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® ballot, with first- and second-team Academic All-America® honorees to be announced in June.

Baker joins Ashton Wilson of Eastern Illinois and Austin Woodard of SIUE as the Ohio Valley Conference representatives on this year's NCAA Division I Academic All-District Men's Track & Field/Cross Country Team.
