NEW ORLEANS, La. -- The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced academic honors for the 2018-19 track and field season on Monday. The Belmont men's track and field team garnered Division I All-Academic team honors while a pair of Bruins - Stephen Gibson (Tuscola, Ill.) and Aidan Thompson (Dunfermline, Scotland) - earned individual distinction.
The Bruins were just one of just three men's track teams from the Ohio Valley Conference to meet the 3.00 GPA mark for inclusion on the All-Academic team list. All told, 139 men's programs were honored by the USTFCCCA for their academic performances.
In order to qualify for the honor, teams must have maintained a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.
The outdoor season saw Belmont finish third overall at the 2019 OVC Outdoor Championships, helping Gibson and Thompson both punch their tickets to compete at the NCAA East Preliminary Round.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met at least one of the following athletic standards:
- For the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org
- For the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
