NASHVILLE, Tenn.- Taking full advantage of the summer months, Belmont women's basketball players Sally McCabe (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.), Madison Blevins (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Sierra Jones (Huntsville, Ala.) recently completed study aboard trips during their "Maymesters." McCabe and Blevins split their time between London and Dublin while Jones traveled to Seville, Spain.
McCabe, the rising junior, completed course work in Comparative Education while Blevins indulged in the subjects of Comparative Public Health. The duo spent time studying and sightseeing in London for nine days before heading to Dublin for the final eight days of their month abroad.
"My experience studying abroad was nothing short of incredible. I am very thankful to Belmont University and Belmont Athletics for this opportunity," said Blevins. "It was great to be able to spend this time alongside Sally, this was a fun experience to share with a teammate and friend."
McCabe and Blevins took this unique opportunity and made the most out of it during their time abroad.
"There were so many cool places to go check out in London, but my favorite experiences were seeing Big Ben and getting to see a play in The Heights," added McCabe. "Dublin had an amazing culture and it reminded me a lot of Nashville with all the great live music."
Jones, the rising junior, participated in a Spanish intensive writing class where she met for 3 hours a day in a setting that didn't allow English to be spoken. Along with the daily work in the classroom, Jones played basketball three times per week and played in two games during her trip.
"It was unique opportunity being able to immerse myself in the Spanish culture. I was forced out of my comfort zone the second I stepped foot in Seville and this allowed me to learn so much," remarked Jones. "Class was very hard but most of the time our assignments were to go out in the streets and talk to people, so I really enjoyed that. I believe my Spanish has certainly improved and I now have much more of an appreciation of the language an culture. I'm blessed to have had this opportunity."
After a very successful season on the court in the Spring, the Belmont women's basketball team has stayed active during the summer with team members participating in mission trips and study abroad programs.
"I am very thankful that we are encouraged to study aboard even as student-athletes because it really is a great way to meet new people and see different parts of the world," said McCabe.
