NASHVILLE, Tenn. – It felt like Jenny Roy (Brentwood, Tenn.) couldn't miss a shot in Belmont's recent wins over Chattanooga and Arkansas State. Those around the Ohio Valley Conference and the state of Tennessee took notice.
Roy's recent stat-packed performances drew significant recognition, earning her co-OVC Women's Basketball Player of the Week honors Monday. She was also named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Player of the Week as well as the conference's player of the week by College Sports Madness.
The senior guard is Belmont's first OVC Player of the Week nod this season, though Darby Maggard (Nov. 19) and Ellie Harmeyer (Nov. 26) were both previously named top players by College Sports Madness. Conley Chinn drew OVC Freshman of the Week recognition two weeks ago. It's Roy's first weekly OVC honor since the mid-way point of her sophomore year.
Roy was an all-around force in Belmont's two wins, averaging 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists. She shares this week's conference award with Karle Pace of Eastern Illinois.
Against Arkansas State on Friday, she tied a career high with 17 points and was simply undefendable, making 7-of-8 shot attempts from the floor. To go with her seven boards and four assists, she also notched three highlight-reel blocks, a career high.
During a trip to Chattanooga last Sunday, Roy enjoyed an equally impressive all-around game. She scored 13 points, grabbed seven rebounds, dished out six assists and made four steals.
Roy now ranks second in the OVC in assists (4.8 per game), third in field goal percentage (.580), sixth in rebounding (7.3) and sixth in steals (2.4).
Belmont is currently on a week break for the Christmas holiday. It's next game will come Sunday, Dec. 30 at nationally ranked [9/9] Tennessee.
