CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont women's basketball team is riding a season-best five-game winning streak as the Bruins pull into Clarksville for an Ohio Valley Conference clash with the Austin Peay Governors.
Belmont is tied for first in the OVC at 6-1 (13-5 overall). Austin Peay is 4-3, 9-9.
FREE THROW RECORD FOR MAGGARD
Darby Maggard broke the OVC record with her 45th consecutive made free throw with a 3-for-3 night at Murray St. (1/24). The previous OVC record streak was 44 (Paige Guffey, Murray State, 2008-09). Maggard is a perfect 25-of-25 on free throws this season and 45-of-45 dating back to Feb. 8, 2018 of last season, the second longest active streak in the nation (53, Rebekah Hand, Marist).
LAST TIME OUT
Belmont edged Murray State 65-58 Thursday for its fifth straight win. After leading by as many as 14, Belmont's lead shrunk to three points with two minutes play. The Racers never score again.
Belmont is 20-7 all-time against Austin Peay. The Bruins won a narrow 78-75 game played at home last year and won 80-71 in Clarksville the season before.
REBOUNDS AND DEFENSE
Belmont is the top defensive and rebounding team in the OVC this season. No team has a better defensive field goal percentage (35.0) and the Bruins also lead the conference in both rebounds per game (42.0) and rebounding margin (+5.7) while ranking second in defensive rebounding (36.4). The Bruins are 11-0 this year when out-rebounding their opponents, 2-5 in all other games.
THE WRIGHT STUFF
Maddie Wright was picked as OVC Player of the Week by College Sports Madness after scoring a career high with 17 points vs. TSU (1/19). She averaged 16.0 points and 6.5 rebounds last week.
65: THE MAGIC NUMBER
Belmont is 13-0 when holding opponents to fewer than 65 points this season. However, the Bruins have lost all five games in which they've allowed 65 or more points.
Maddie Wright's 10 points and 11 rebounds at Murray St. gave Wright her first double-double of the season and the first by any Bruin other than Ellie Harmeyer, who has five in 2018-19.
