Back-to-back honors

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – For the second straight week, Belmont women's basketball senior Darby Maggard has been named Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.

Maggard (Larwill, Ind.) continued her torrid end-of-season stretch by averaging 23.5 points and 4.5 assists this past week, shooting 11-of-21 from the 3-point line over two wins. Belmont clinched its third straight OVC regular-season championship on Saturday with the latter of those two victories against SIU Edwardsville.

Maggard shares this week's honor with Southeast Missouri's Tesia Thompson.

She had games of 25 and 22 points and set a season high with seven made 3-pointers against Eastern Illinois on Thursday. Overall she had a near repeat weekly performance from what earned her a first OVC nod of the season last week. She averaged 24.0 points and 5.0 assists two weeks ago.

Maggard's 3-point shooting this past week pushed her over 400 made threes for her career, only the fifth time that's happened for a player in NCAA Division I history. She has 409 career 3-pointers and counting. The senior point guard continues to close in on further career milestones and is now just 71 points away from 2,000 for her tremendous career.

The weekly honor is Maggard's third of her career and the sixth by a Belmont player this season. Ellie Harmeyer has won three times and Jenny Roy (Brentwood, Tenn.) previoiusly won once.

The Bruins close out the OVC regular season this week with two final games, both on the road. Belmont visits UT Martin on Thursday before the finale at SEMO on Saturday.

The OVC Tournament begins March 6 in Evansville, Ind.
