NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After Belmont's dominant defensive effort this past weekend, senior Bruin Sarah Bossung has been named Defensive Player of the Week by the Ohio Valley Conference.
Belmont extended its unbeaten streak to three games, the active best in the OVC, by going 1-0-1 at E.S. Rose Park over the weekend. The Bruins shut out Valparaiso 1-0 on Sunday after battling to an 1-1 overtime draw with UAB on Friday.
Bossung's play was paramount in both contests. The senior from Nashville played all 190 minutes across both games, not even missing time after being shaken up by a collision near her own goal in the second half against Valparaiso. Instead, Bossung collected herself and finished out the 1-0 shutout of the Crusaders.
"Sarah is a great leader for us on and off the field and I'm extremely happy for her to be recognized this week by the OVC," Belmont Head Coach Heather Henson said.
Bossung leads all Bruins with an average of 91 minutes played per game thanks to Belmont's two overtime contests. She has played the entirety of four of the Bruins six games this year with a season-high 107 minutes logged in a double-OT win over LIU Brooklyn.
A four-year starter, Bossung's starting streak has reached 43 consecutive games through the Valparaiso win. She has 54 career starts in all.
This is her first weekly honor from the conference.
The OVC's other weekly honors announced Tuesday included Austin Peay's Morgan Drawdy as Offensive Player of the Week and Austin Peay's Mary Parker Powell as Goalkeeper of the Week.
The Bruins will face those Governors to open OVC play on Friday.
