Stumble at APSU

Stumble at APSU

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -- Belmont University Softball stumbled in its first Ohio Valley Conference road doubleheader on Friday evening. The Bruins (19-12, 2-4 OVC) fell on the road at Austin Peay (18-14, 3-1 OVC), 9-1 and 6-3.

The Governors were the first to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second frame with a solo homerun. APSU went on to post two more runs in the bottom of the third inning, thanks to another solo homerun and a long triple. After three silent innings, the Bruins were finally able to make a mark in the top of the fourth frame.

Senior Hayley Baker (Rockwall, Texas) sent a double into the right gap and junior Bailey Sims (Flowery Branch, Ga.) followed with a long single to send her over the plate. However, APSU broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth inning using a pair of homeruns to plate a total of five runs to take control of the contest and seal the 9-1 win.

In game two, the Bruins were first to record a run on the scoreboard. Senior Baylee Cook (Lewisburg, Tenn.) reached first base on four balls and was sent home with a double to right by Baker. Belmont quickly added two more runs in the top of the second inning, thanks to a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Elison Ollinger (Robins, Iowa) and a shallow single to right from classmate Cheyenne Cavanaugh (Spring, Texas). Austin Peay snuck a crucial run over the plate in the bottom of the third frame to begin chipping away at the slim 3-1 BU lead.

Belmont appeared to have its opponent held at bay with a quiet fourth inning. The Bruins were able to get runners into scoring position in the top of the next half inning but were unable to get them home. The Govs seized the opportunity and came charging back in the bottom of the fifth inning, using a two-run homerun to knot the score 3-3 and duplicated the feat in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead, 6-3. The Bruins were able to, once again, get runners on base but could make up the run differential, falling by the same score.

For the day, Baker, Sims, and Cavanaugh each batted .333. Baker finished with a pair of doubles and an RBI while Cavanaugh posted a pair of RBI.

Belmont returns to action on Sunday with a trip for doubleheader at Murray State. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. CT. Live stats will be available and the contest can be seen live on ESPN+.
