Track and Field has Strong Showing on Day One of OVC Indoors

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Belmont Track and Field Teams had a strong showing on the first day of the 2014 OVC Indoor Championships.  The women's team finished in fifth while the men's team finished in sixth on Friday at Tennessee State's Gentry Center.

Headlining the Bruin performances was a first place finish in the men's Distance Medley Relay with a time of 10:03.13.  Belmont also saw another program record fall, this time in the weight throw, when junior Clare Sobon (Somerset, N.J.) with a mark of 16.12m to take ninth in the deep field.

Grabbing second place in the 5000m was newly tabbed OVC Indoor Track Athlete of the Year sophomore Hannah Wittman (Lindenhurst, Ill.) with a time of 17:14.10.  Senior Jilian Linklater (Lake Orion, Mich.) took second in the high jump with a mark of 1.70m.  Senior Matt Miller (LaPorte, Ind.) finished fourth in the 5000m with a time of 14:40.14.

Sophomore Vinny Maniscalco (North Chelmsford, Mass.) holds onto third place heading into the final day of the Heptathlon with a total of 2,610 points.

BU saw several student-athletes qualify for the finals in their respective events including senior Zach Gray (Lee's Summitt, Mo.) in the 400m and Olivia Hippensteel, junior Eric Kigen (Eldoret, Kenya) and sophomore Eamonn Kichuk (Unionville, Ont., Canada), each in the 800m.

Saturday's events are slated to begin at 9 a.m. with the conclusion of the Pentathlon and Heptathlon.  Individual events will begin at 11 a.m.  Live scoring will be available.
