Going Out with a Bang

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The Belmont Track and Field teams pulled off several gutsy performances on the final day of the 2014 OVC Outdoor Championship, hosted by SIUE.  The Bruins wrapped the two-day meet with a total of four medals.

After two days of intense competition, the men's team finished fifth with 87 points, doubling their total from one year ago, while the women's team finished ninth with 35 points. 

The medaling continued for the Bruins on the second day of the Championship as sophomore Vinny Maniscalco (North Chelmsford, Mass.) earned bronze in the Decathlon with a total of 5,674 points.  Senior Tyler Newkirk took fifth (5,550 points) in the event.  Also taking home bronze was Austin Landis (Victor, Mont.) in the hammer throw with a mark of 56.44m (185'2"). 

Junior Marcus Bridger-Wilkinson (Newbury, England) handily won the 1500m to win gold with a time of 3:47.03.  He has already recorded a time to move on to the NCAA East Regional in the event.  On the women's side of the event, freshman Maggie Harahan (Greensboro, N.C.) finished fifth (4:39.66). 

Junior Erick Kigen (Eldoret, Kenya) earned BU's second gold medal of the meet, taking first in the 800m with a time of 1:50.50, setting a new Belmont record.

In the 400m, Emily Davis notched a fifth-place finish in the 400m with a PR of 55.81. 

In the final events of the day, the men's team (Alanzo Contini, Caleb Darnell, Brent Scott and Eamonn Kichuk) battled to the wire to finish fourth in the 4x400m with a time of 3:21.04, setting a new program record.  The women's team finished fifth in the 4x400m with a time of 3:53.29.

The Bruins will return to action May 16-17 at the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta.
