NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont women's track and field team completed competition at both the Raleigh Relays and the Joe Walker Invitational this weekend.

At the Raleigh Relays, hosted by North Carolina State, junior Kiera Weems, (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) junior Jessica King, (Fishers, Ind.) and freshman Kortney Schardt (Lindenhurst, Ill.) represented the Bruins.

Weems competed in the 1500 meter run and finished her race with a time of 4:41.74.  King and Schardt both competed in the 5000 meter run and finished with times of 17:25.38 and 18:03.09 respectively.

"Raleigh Relays was a great experience for the small group of distance athletes we took down there to compete. It's always fun to have this opportunity to compete in such an elite meet and we believe our athletes made the most of the experience. Jess King ran her debut 5k race and showed just how well training is coming together for her. We are especially excited to have her healthy for an entire year and feel very confident in her ability to run fast this spring. Freshman Kortney Schardt is coming off a strong cross country season and we are confident she is setting herself up for a big end to her first year here. Kiera Weems ran a season best in the 1500 in a heat that went out much more tactical than we anticipated. She has been consistently training at a high level and we are excited to watch it come together over the next couple months," said Assistant coach Ashley Casavant.

At the Joe Walker Invitational, hosted by Ole Miss, the Bruins were led by a second place finish by sophomore LaCarol Baynes (Houston, Texas) in the 400 meter hurdles.  Baynes ran her race with a time of 1:02.16.

Freshman Lexi Grieves (Metamora, Ill.) also boasted an impressive performance, recording a personal best in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:24.11.

"Lexi came out and ran a smart race, and I know she's got a lot more to show us this spring.  LaCarol had a pretty good opener, and once she spends a little more time with the long hurdles, that time is going to drop by a good amount.  We've got about 7 weeks until conference, and I'm confident these girls can step it up and take on the challenge," said Associate Head Coach  Cameron Harvey.

The Belmont squad will be back on the track at the Florida Relays March 30-31.
