CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - - Belmont University women's track & field got early points on the board on Day 1 of the 2019 OVC Outdoor Championships hosted by Southeast Missouri.
Sophomore Jessica Mattsson (Tierp, Sweden) was poised to claim Belmont's first individual title of the meet, as she posted a season-best mark of 60.05m in the hammer throw. But Eastern Illinois' Makenna Wilson would stun those in attendance on her final throw, going nearly four meters better than her previous best, to claim top honors by the narrowest of margins - 0.08m.
Freshman Tyra Finkeldey (Old Saybrook, Conn.) finished fifth in the pole vault, clearing 3.49m.
Competitors had to pack patience as Mother Nature intervened throughout a stormy day.
Among Belmont highlights in the Day 1 prelims, sophomore Caroline Pruitt (Allen, Texas) recorded a personal record time of 1:03.42 in the 400m hurdles. Senior Kortney Schardt (Lindenhurst, Ill.) also easily qualified for the 1500m final.
