Bucknam Joins Bruin Staff

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Belmont cross country and track and field head coach Jeff Langdon announced the hiring of Kate Bucknam as assistant cross country coach Thursday morning.

"It is my great pleasure to introduce Kate Bucknam as a member of our coaching staff," Langdon said. "Kate most impressed me with her enthusiasm and communication skills.  She is highly organized and most importantly a woman of great character.  She will be a great fit for our program."

Bucknam will help Coach Langdon oversee the training of the men's and women's cross country teams as well as the distance events for track. In addition she will take over several operational responsibilities.  She comes with a wealth of experience and knowledge in the sport having run at both the University of Minnesota and Lipscomb University.  Most recently she served as an assistant coach at Syracuse. While at Minnesota, Bucknam was instrumental in helping the Gophers qualify  for the NCAA Cross Country Championship for just the 10th time in program history, finishing sixth on the squad in her NCAA debut as a redshirt junior. She was an Academic All-Big Ten selection and earned the NCAA Sportsmanship Award following the 2014 cross country season.

"I'm very excited to be joining the track and field and cross country staff here at Belmont," Bucknam said. "To be part of a staff that has been coaching/competing here for a combined number of 50 years, I know I am going to be learning a great deal. I owe my gratitude to the administration, Coach Langdon and his assistants, and to the team for trusting me to work alongside them to continue to build this program and add to its success."

On the track, she most commonly competed in the 1,500 and 3,000-meter steeplechase during her outdoor campaigns and the mile and 3k during her indoor seasons. She placed 11th at the 2015 Big Ten Championship in the steeplechase. She had also previously won the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award during the 2015 track season.

She earned her undergraduate degree in kinesiology and is currently working on a Master's degree in exercise science at Syracuse. Bucknam comes from a running family as her father Chris is the track and field coach at the University of Arkansas where he is the 15-time SEC Coach of the Year, 2013 National Coach of the Year and has mentored 240 All-Americans.

Bucknam will join the Bruins in August.
