PEORIA, Ill., -- The Belmont Bruins women's cross country team finished 20th in a field of 39 teams in the Red race at the Bradley 'Pink' Classic 6K.
Belmont finished ahead of the two other OVC schools competing in the race, Eastern Illinois and SIU Edwardsville.
Though they were competing in their first 6K of the season and dealing with the cold and wet conditions in Peoria, Ill., the Bruins were able to maintain their game plan of staying together and execute it nicely.
"I thought we ran decent today," said Kate Bucknam, assistant coach for Belmont cross country. "It was good to get a 6K in since that's what we run at regionals. The conditions were rough-sleet, muddy, cold. For the Red Race, I was most happy with having around a 45 second spread between our number 1 and 5 runner. Sierra Lax had a phenomenal race running close to a PR and being our number 2 and leading the pack after Kortney Schardt. For the Open race, Ruth Wiggins and Mallory Young really stepped up and had good efforts today. We still have some work to do as a whole, and the next week will be a key training week as we enter the post season."
Kortney Schardt lead the pack for the Bruins while finishing No. 58 in the race. She posted a time of 21:52.4.
Sierra Lax was indeed very close to setting a new PR for herself. Today she ran with a time of 22:19.5, and that put her 6 seconds within setting a new personal best for herself which is 22:13.6 in the 6K setting. This was set at last year's NCAA South Region 6K.
Despite the cold and muggy conditions, the Bruins ran a solid race today and will take that encouragement with them when they compete in their next race, which is the OVC Championships.
The OVC Championships will be held on Saturday, October 27, at Cape Girardeau, Mo.
