CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - - The Belmont Bruins women's cross country team finished 3rd in the OVC Championship this morning, finishing behind only Southeast Missouri and Eastern Kentucky.
The ladies finished a mere 10 points behind the second place team Southeast Missouri after running a clean race in which four Bruins finished in the top 25.
"I'm super proud of the girls," said Coach Kate Bucknam. "We were only ten points behind Southeastern Missouri, who have been dominating us all season, so to come away with only being ten points behind them is phenomenal."
Kortney Schardt had an excellent race today, as she ran a PR for a 5K run while also finishing 5th overall. Her time posted was 17:36.2.
"She ran out of her mind," said Coach Bucknam. "That was the best I've seen her run, and she says that's the hardest she's ever pushed in a race. That's exactly what I asked for on this day. She went after it, and I'm super happy for her."
"It was an awesome course to run," said Schardt. "I'm just feeling very happy with what the team did. We all just pushed it, and I think that this course gave us the ability to show [our competition] what we are made of.
"I think we are going to be mentally ready. This race gave us the confidence that we needed, and I think going into regionals, we are going to have that confidence and push it to the best of our ability."
The Bruins will be looking to build off of this great result when they head to Tallahassee, Fla. for the NCAA South Regionals on Friday, November 9.
