SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Belmont Bruins women's cross country team placed 15th at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational on Friday.
Overall, five Bruins finished within the top-100, as they finished with a total team time of 1:31.29 on the day. Senior Kortney Schardt led Belmont with a mark of 17:47.81, which was good for 34th place.
"The ladies really stepped up today and ran well," said director of cross country Jeff Langdon. "We finally had some good race conditions after training in the heat for so long."
Senior Sierra Lax recorded the next best time for the Bruins with a 60th place finish (18:11.15), as freshman Lily Hallum (85th, 18:25.71), freshman Katie Flaherty (89th, 18:30.23) and junior Claire Cheeseman (92nd, 18:33.78) finished close behind.
Junior Maria Brauer also tallied a 62nd-place finish in the 5K for Belmont.
"The team definitely took a huge step forward today," Langdon said. "Lily Hallum had a tremendous race and showed a ton of progress today."
In total, seven runners participated in the Joe Piane Invitational, which included matchups with Cal State Fullerton, Miami (Ohio), Clemson, Wyoming and Akron.
