Ready for Conference

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Belmont University women's cross country takes confidence and momentum with them to the 2019 Ohio Valley Conference Championships Saturday, hosted by SIU Edwardsville.

The women raced 11 days ago at their UAB Blazer Classic 6K, placing ninth out of 24 teams. The team was led by seniors Kortney Schardt (19th) and Sierra Lax (29th).

Schardt, a returning All-OVC performer who placed fifth at conference a year ago, leads a deep and developing Bruin squad.

"I'm really excited about where we are at this point in the season," women's distance coach Kate Bucknam said. "We have had great consistency, and have really worked on packing up in practice. I'm seeing the benefits of that and I think they are too. I think the team is more than ready to step up to the challenge and do something great this weekend."

Freshmen Zoe Goodmanson and Lilyan Hallum have been a highlight in the eyes of Bucknam.

"I'm really proud of our freshmen who have stepped up when it counts, along with Claire Cheeseman who has come back from a pretty significant setback this past summer. She (Claire) has definitely defeated the odds and that's really a testament to her discipline and character."

The trio finished UAB with sub 22:15 races.

The field features Eastern Kentucky. a perennial contender ranked 13th in the latest USTFCCCA Southeast Region poll.

The women's race will start at 10 a.m. CT.
