MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis Tigers (4-3-0) pitcher Carly Hummel shined in a one hitter shutout victory over the Belmont Bruins (0-5-0) in game one of a Tuesday night doubleheader. The Tigers started the game strong by scoring four runs in the first inning and never looked back. Memphis went on to win the game by a score of 7-0.
Memphis starting pitcher Carly Hummel has been strong so far this season recording a 2.06 ERA with 27 strikeouts. She started the game against the Bruins strong with three straight strikeouts to begin the game.
The Tigers turned around in the bottom of the first to put up four runs. Trouble started for the Bruins when Lelani Bernardino was hit by a pitch. The next two Memphis batters both singled, loading the bases with one out. A fielding error on a ground ball to shortstop allowed one run to come in for the Tigers and left the bases loaded for Maddie McKinley, whose single up the middle drove in two more runs. The Tigers added one more run in the inning to cap off the scoring.
The Bruins seemed to have something going for them in the second inning when Ashley Byers (Westerville, Ohio) reached base as the leadoff batter. Cassie Bollin (Madison, Tenn.), who was pinch running for Byers, was then able to advance to second base after a pitch got by the Tiger's catcher. Nevertheless, Hummel was able to get the next three Bruins batters to foul out, ground out, and strike out to close the inning.
The Tigers added to their lead to six in the bottom of the third inning when Keanah Prestridge hit a homerun down the left field line to drive in two runs.
Memphis struck again in the fourth inning when Heather Mott hit a solo homerun to lead off the inning.
Belmont looked threatening again in the sixth inning when Kelley Cash (Hudson, Ohio) reached base off of a walk. The next Bruins batter, however, grounded into a double play, eliminating the initial threat. Afterwards, Dawn Thoni (Franklin, Tenn.) was able to reach first base off of a fielding error by the Tiger's shortstop. Thoni then preceeded to steal second base, but was left stranded there when Belmont batter Brooke Babington (Johnston City, Ill.) grounded out to end the inning.
Hummel took a no hitter into the seventh inning, and proceeded to strikeout the first two Bruins batters that she faced. With only one out remaining, Bruins senior Erin Gier (Asheville, N.C.) hit a single down the left field line to break up the no hitter. Gier was subsequently thrown out as she attempted to steal second base.
In the end, Hummel pitched a complete game with no earned runs and one hit. Memphis held the edge in hits 7-1.
Belmont will face the Tigers again momentarily in the second game of their double header. More information will come upon completion of the second game.
