NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Belmont softball used a grand slam by Jessica Wilson (Alvin, Tex.) in the first inning in its final game of the 2014 Music City Classic Sunday afternoon to help the Bruins defeat Detroit, 9-1, in five innings on a brisk day at Rose Park.
Belmont got off to a fast start offensively as the Bruins quickly loaded the bases in the bottom of the first inning off a single to right field by junior Kat Hollingsworth (Carrollton, Tex.).
Wilson quickly took advantage on the following play as the sophomore cleared the bases off tremendous grand slam home run to left field. The homer marked the first Bruin home run of the 2014 season.
Later in the inning, starting pitcher Taylor Moon (Vestavia, Ala.) drove in a run as the Bruins jumped out to the early, 5-0, advantage.
Belmont (2-2) never looked back as the Bruins added four insurance runs in the fourth and fifth innings as BU captured the easy, 9-1, victory in five innings of play to end the 2014 Music City Classic on a high note.
The Bruins finished 2-2 on the weekend with both victories coming against the Titans of Detroit.
Moon (1-1) captured her first victory of the season on the mound, recording six strikeouts on the game. Moon also made a difference offensively as the sophomore went a perfect 2-for-2, knocking in a pair of runs for the Bruins.
Hollingsworth and junior Kirbie Ferrell both finished 2-for-3 on the afternoon. Hollingsworth recorded her first triple of the season.
Belmont returns to action this weekend as the Bruins travel to Birmingham, Ala. to take part in the 2014 Samford Tournament on the campus of Samford University. BU begins play on Friday, Feb. 14, as the Bruins take on the host Bulldogs at 5:30 p.m.
