MOREHEAD, Ky – Belmont softball came up short in both contests Saturday afternoon as Morehead State (15-18, 6-7 OVC) earned the sweep of the Bruins on the afternoon; 4-1, 4-2.
GAME 1: Morehead State 4, Belmont 1
After three and one half scoreless innings, Morehead State tallied one run each in the fourth and fifth innings to go ahead, 2-0, over the Bruins in the first game of the day's doubleheader.
Belmont used an RBI single to left field from Amy Zeronian (Pasadena, Calif.) in the top of the sixth inning in order to cut the Eagle's advantage in half, as the Bruins lit up the scoreboard for the first time on the afternoon.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, MSU used a single to third base in order to load the bases full of Eagles.
A two-RBI single to right center field followed as the hosts added a pair of runs to their advantage and Morehead State went on for the 4-1 victory.
Overall, BU recorded six hits on the contest led by sophomore Kayla Wells (Bonney Lake, Wash.) who finished 2-for-3 at the plate.
Belmont's Carolyn Snodgress (Torrance, Calif.) was credited with the loss as the junior allowed nine hits and four earned runs on six innings of work and finished with four strikeouts.
GAME 2: Morehead State 4, Belmont 2
MSU tallied a run in the first inning and three runs in the third as the Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 advantage over the Bruins in the nightcap of the twin bill.
Belmont's bats were silenced for much of the contest as Morehead State's starting pitcher Tanna Seuferer was automatic from the circle for most of the game, allowing just one Bruin hit through the first six innings of play.
With one out in the top of the seventh, a Zeronian single to shortstop gave Belmont its second hit of the contest. Senior Kat Hollingsworth (Carrollton, Texas) followed that with her team-leading 13th double on the year and her 41st of her career.
With runners on second and third, BU's Jessica Wilson (Alvin, Texas) and Chelsey Deloney (Gardendale, Ala.) recorded back-to-back RBI singles as the Bruins cut its deficit in half, 4-2.
Belmont's rally attempt ended there, however, as Jordan Daly (Humble, Texas) popped up to first base and Taylor Hodge (Maryville, Tenn.) was called out on a fielder's choice as Morehead State went on for the 4-2 victory and completed the sweep of the Bruins on the afternoon.
BU finished the contest with five hits by five different players while Taylor Moon (Vestavia, Ala.) was credited with the loss as the junior gave up four earned runs on seven hits through six innings from inside the circle.
Belmont (9-26, 4-11 OVC) returns to action tomorrow afternoon as the Bruins are set conclude the three-game series with the Eagles with a 12 p.m. contest at University Field.
